You may look at me and think I’ve always been healthy, but that is far from the truth. My whole life has been plagued with health issues. As a little girl I was sick a lot, ear infections, strep throat, tonsillitis 3-6 x/year, doctors, hospitals and lots of antibiotics. The continual repeat of antibiotics suppressed my immune system which gave way to an auto immune disease (psoriasis) at age 10, that went undiagnosed for decades.
Not understanding this condition, and having 3 brothers, I was in constant competition mode, playing every sport and activity known to man. This lifestyle put a tremendous strain on my adrenals and I contracted mono- or Epstein barre virus when I was 15. My body completely shut down and I was in bed for a month.
In college, while preparing for a body building competition, I had an accident in the gym and herniated 2 discs in my lower back, causing chronic pain, debilitating sciatic and inflammation for decades. At the same time, the low-fat, no fat diet contributed to the symptoms. Consuming empty carbs, gluten and sugar, was a detriment to my brain, joints and the cause of chronic inflammation.

Growing up, I ate the SAD diet (Standard American Diet), constantly trying to lose weight (at one point weighed over 200 pounds), and for many years was on the low fat no fat diet which deprived my brain of the essential good fats that are needed for cognitive function.
So the bottom line is….I know what it’s like
♦ to feel every muscle, bone and joint in my body
♦ having brain fog, concentration & comprehension issues.
♦ Headaches for days and migraines so bad I would vomit
♦ Feeling tired but wired, tossing and turning all night then being a bit moody the next day.
♦ Going from a very strong athlete to my strength being completely depleted
♦ Having body exhaustion so bad, I felt like a lead brick
♦ Having a progressive auto immune disease, psoriasis that has progressed to psoriatic arthritis
♦ Having food intolerances, and not able to enjoy my favorite meals and foods
♦ And having a compromised immune system that has left me open to contract many other health issues,
glycome, blood sugar, and skin cancer to name a few.
In July 2015, I collapsed in bed with the worse migraine I had ever had, extreme exhaustion, pain and brain fog. And I stayed there for 3 weeks. The diagnoses revealed, I had a lot of health issues including :
♦ Adrenal burnout
♦ Auto immune disease(psoriasis)
♦ Blood sugar issues
♦ Extremely low immunity
♦ Gluten intolerance
♦ Sugar intolerance
I thought I was dying. Never did I think, or was aware that years of progressively poor nutrition habits and lifestyle choices, led to physical and mental disorders, including:
♦ mood swings
♦ memory and cognitive impairments
♦ inflammation conditions
♦ concentration problems
My body was shutting down. Back to the Doctors…appointment after appointment more diagnosis’ and all they wanted to do was write prescriptions: antibiotics, steroids, pain killers, sleep aids and antidepressants.
I didn’t like that idea. I knew the body has an innate intelligence to heal itself when given the chance. So I started searching. I needed to find a way to detoxify my body and give it an opportunity to rest, reset, rejuvenate and recover.
Finally, I found a functional medicine doctor. I invested in my health, my future and my future with my family.
I learned the importance of using food as medicine, but to implement this, I needed to reframe my thought process around food. Seeing food as nourishment for ‘my body’, for every single muscle, organ and cell that constitutes my being, my life.
Did you know there are over 72 trillion cells that make up each one of us? They are all alive. Depending on what we feed them, they either function, live and divide, or mutate to illness or disease. It is up to us what we chose to feed them, that will either nourish them or allow sickness and disease to manifest.
I chose to nourish and support them, so they can support me and stop this downward spiral of disfunction.
I realized there were lifestyle choices that were part of the root cause of this classic case of burnout. So I made changes. And the easy and fun part was finding the foods that work for me without sacrificing taste, texture, flavor and joy in eating!!!
Now, all the symptoms have disappeared….unless I eat the foods that cause the symptoms….and the 50 pounds I was always struggling with, melting off and has stayed off for over 4 years.
I feel younger now than I did 10 years ago. My vitality and vigor for life, despite on going life challenges, that we are all dealing with continues to get stronger and stronger.
